How BAA students are building their future in construction
Everyone’s journey into construction looks different, but the goal is usually the same: build a better future, gain confidence, and move forward in your career.
At Builders Academy, students come from all kinds of backgrounds. Some are just getting started, while others are already on the tools and looking to take things further.
In the videos below, three students share their experiences: what led them to Builders Academy, what it’s been like studying, and where they’re heading next.
Starting point: different backgrounds, shared ambition
For most people, deciding to upskill doesn’t happen overnight.
Some start out on-site and realise they need formal qualifications to move forward. Others are looking for a clearer way into the industry but aren’t sure where to begin.
Across all three student stories, there’s a common thread:
they wanted to improve
they knew experience alone isn’t always enough
and they were ready to take the next step
That’s usually the point where people decide to take things more seriously and start looking for the right training.
Real stories from Builders Academy students
Meet BAA students Zach and Couper
Zach and Couper talk about what it’s like being taught by trainers who’ve actually worked in the industry. Going beyond covering theory, they’re able to ask questions about real situations they’re dealing with on-site and get answers that make sense in practice.
That kind of access makes a difference because rather than getting stuck, they can check things as they go and keep building confidence over time.
Flexibility has also been a big part of their experience. There aren’t rigid weekly deadlines, so they can work through modules around their schedule and stay consistent without it clashing with work.
For both of them, enrolling was about progressing further in the trade. Having grown up around construction, it felt like a natural path, but they’re aiming higher than just staying where they are. By studying a Diploma of Building and Construction, they’re building the knowledge needed to move forward and work toward a builder’s licence.
Meet BAA student William
For William, the biggest difference has been how practical the learning feels.
One thing that stood out straight away was having a trainer come out to the job site. Instead of learning in isolation, he’s able to walk through real scenarios as they happen, which makes everything easier to understand and apply.
That hands-on approach was a big reason he chose Builders Academy. After looking into different traineeships, he was looking for something that reflected what the job is actually like - not just theory. This felt closer to how the work really happens day to day.
Now studying the Certificate IV in Building and Construction, William is developing skills he can use straight away, while setting himself up for the next stage of his career.
He describes the experience as energetic, engaging, and reliable - which comes down to both the teaching style and the ongoing support.
His advice for anyone starting out is pretty straightforward: it can be tough early on, but it’s worth sticking with.
Meet BAA student Ben
Ben’s experience is a good example of how important flexibility can be when you’re working and studying at the same time.
Currently completing his Certificate III in Carpentry, he’s able to study when it suits him - whether that’s after work or around his schedule on-site. Having that control makes it much easier to stay on track.
At the same time, support is always there when he needs it. He knows he can reach out to his trainer at any point, which takes a lot of the pressure off when something doesn’t make sense straight away.
For Ben, getting into construction was about just starting. His advice is simple: give it a go. Whether it’s a trial or your first job on-site, getting hands-on is the best way to figure out if it’s right for you.
The learning experience: practical, flexible, supportive
While each student’s situation is different, a few things come up consistently.
flexible study options that work around job schedules
learning that connects directly to real work
trainers who understand the industry and how to teach it
That combination is key. Construction isn’t something you learn with theoretical knowledge - you need to understand how it works in practice.
The goal goes beyond completing a course. When students build the confidence, skills and knowledge to take the next step, that's when meaningful outcomes happen.
The outcome: more than just a qualification
Each student’s path looks a little different, but the results are similar.
more confidence in their skills
a clearer direction for their career
new opportunities to move forward
For some, that means working toward a builder’s licence. For others, it’s about stepping into bigger roles or planning ahead for running their own business.
The qualification is part of it but what matters more is what it allows them to do next.
Looking ahead: building what’s next
What stands out isn’t just where these students are now, but where they’re heading.
Construction offers real, long-term career paths. With the right training and support, it’s possible to keep progressing and building something solid over time.
That’s what these stories show - steady progress, backed by the right support.
